With food, fuel and energy costs skyrocketing, rents across York spiralling, whilst wages stagnate, I know that many people are really worried about how they will get through this winter. I have spoken to so many residents who are having to make drastic choices, and will be cold or hungry if they can’t access support. The cost-of-living crisis is impacting on everyone, residents and businesses.
As we did through the Covid pandemic, we need to come together as a city to support one another this winter. York is known for showing extraordinary acts of kindness and generosity. From reaching out to neighbours, to our incredible voluntary sector organisations, there are many ways that we can all play a role to help.
The oil and gas producers, food retailers and housing developers continue to make significant profits, which is completely unacceptable when people cannot heat their homes, feed their families or have somewhere decent to live. I will be raising these issues in Parliament, while ensuring that you have the support you need in York.
This handbook sets out ways you can get advice and practical support through this winter and how you can donate essentials, time and money to care for those in need.
As your representative, I am always here for you and will work to support you in every way I can.
