Rachael Maskell MP has expressed outrage that the Prime Minister, Theresa May, will not condemn the actions of the Brexit campaign group, Vote Leave, following a fine of £61,000 and referral to the police after the Electoral Commission has confirmed the group broke the law.

Ms Maskell says:

“It comes as no surprise to learn that the Prime Minister is protecting the Government rather than our democracy over the illegal actions taken by the Vote Leave fronted by Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, her then Foreign Secretary and her Environment Secretary up until one week ago.  Boris Johnson and Michael Gove have done immense damage to our country and most people will not be surprised to learn that they broke the law.

“The watchdog said Vote Leave exceeded its £7m spending limit by funnelling £675,315 through pro Brexit youth group, Beleave.  This is clearly corruption at its worse.  To think that Government Ministers, who sat on the organisations board have stayed silent says everything we need to know about Theresa May and her Cabinet.  We need people in Government who will do the right thing for the people of our country. This is so serious, as it completely undermines the way our democracy works and shows that votes are bought, not least, in this case, by funding from overseas too, believed to be Russia.

“Urgent action is needed to be taken by this Government, over this corruption which was at the heart of the Referendum.”
