Rachael Maskell MP, in recognising the appalling state of the country this Labour Government inherited from 14 years of poor leadership under the Tories and Coalition Governments, that it will take time to rebuild our country. However, this does not dampen Labour’s ambition with a clear Plan for Change, launched today, so the country will be able to follow the six clear milestones covering housebuilding, the economy, the NHS, clean power, education and crime, to measure change by the end of this Parliament.
The plan is underpinned by foundations of sound public finances and national security.
The Plan for Change will focus on the core foundations for rebuilding our country, for example, NHS waiting lists, where 7,573,212 are left on NHS waiting lists, tackled through 40,000 additional NHS operations, as well as investment in state-of-the-art hospital equipment for diagnostics and treatment. Instead of the rising blight of knife crime and robbery, putting 13,000 police officers, PCSOs and special constables back on the beat, preventing crime and supporting victims. With a third of children not reaching a good level of development, new crucial milestones will ensure that children will have a strong start with the 300 new school-based nurseries and free breakfast clubs as well as a strong supportive curriculum to raise standards. Labour will further boost pay for the 3 million workers currently dependent on the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage, benefitting 5,200 households here in York.
Great British Energy will provide clean, secure and homegrown power. Labour will also focus on rebuilding our nations’ housing supply with 1.5m homes alongside 150 infrastructure projects.
Responding, Rachael Maskell MP for York Central says:
“The ambition in this Plan for Change, cannot be understated. Labour was elected to rebuild our country after 14 disastrous years of low growth and low prospects. Everyone will gain from better household income, healthcare, community safety and education. It is the bread and butter of what Labour governments are elected to do, and will create an environment where the country, communities and families are more secure and have the opportunities that have been missing for over a decade. Now we have this Plan for Change, I will work with the Labour Government to innovate and determine how it can deliver this for York and the country.”
