Today’s Budget has been described by York Central MP as a ‘cut and run’ budget from a Tory Party who have run out of ideas.
After 25 tax rises, Rachael Maskell MP calls today’s announced tax cuts ‘smoke and mirrors’ as budget forecasts show the highest levels of tax since 1948. After 14 ‘squandered’ years, the Tories are leaving our country with record debt, with public services on their knees and households dealing with the cost-of-living, high rents and mortgages; utility, food and fuel bills.
Ms Maskell is scheduled to speak in the budget debate later this evening.
Rachael Maskell MP says:
“Today’s budget is a ‘cut and run’ budget from a Tory Party who have run out of ideas. The smoke and mirrors of so-called tax cuts are not to be believed, tax is forecast to increase to levels not seen since 1948 and the post-war recovery, and this budget has almost nothing to address people’s serious worries that key public services are at breaking point.
“Working people are still feeling the shockwaves of the Truss mini-budget that wrecked household finances and sent housing costs rocketing.
“I’m pleased to see my campaign to crack down on the holiday lets industry paying off with the Chancellor announcing the end of tax breaks for holiday-let investors. I also note that funding has finally been announced for York’s National Railway Museum and I will be seeking further details on this.
“Today there will be headlines, tomorrow reality will hit, but people won’t forget these last 14 squandered years. With the General Election on the horizon and the prospect of an economic reset with Labour, we can be assured that a Labour Government will focus on our common purpose for the common good.”
