Rachael Maskell MP supports the funding bid for York to be the UK’s first all-electric bus city. Co-signing a letter of support alongside Cllr Danny Myers, the Leader of City of York Council’s Labour Group for inclusion in the City of York Council funding bid, Ms Maskell highlighted the levels of pollution experienced in the city because of congestion, the cuts in bus services that residents have suffered; and the opportunity to tackle growing inequalities through sustainable transport.

Rachael Maskell MP says:
“The city has experienced a severe cut in bus services, often meaning that people are left without a service in the evenings and at weekends, we therefore want to see a significant investment in the bus network to provide equality of opportunity for people across York. If the bus network were to expand, then again we believe that this should be through ensuring that all buses are electrified.

“We believe that this ambition is vital for the future of York’s environment, economy and the health of its residents, and tackling the huge levels of inequality in York.”

Cllr Danny Myers added:
“Creating a sustainable and integrated transport system is integral to ensure that York fulfils its ambition for being the UK’s first carbon neutral city. We have long advocated for this, and believe that York lends itself to being prioritised for funding to build a sustainable bus network.”
