Small Business Saturday will bring together the very best of York’s independent businesses. They provide a great service to the city and attract customers from all over the country as well as visitors from overseas.

Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to support small businesses in the local community.  Events and promotions are being held throughout the country on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The concept started out in the United States and was brought to the UK by Chuka Umunna, the former Labour Shadow Business Secretary.  Now all the major political parties endorse the day and it is expected to be a huge success in raising awareness and promoting the five million small businesses in the UK.

Visiting the giant marquee in Duncombe Place, Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central and Councillor Janet Looker, Labour Group Leader at City of York Council met with Martyn Weller, the York Branch Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses, to help celebrate Small Business Saturday.

Rachael Maskell MP says:
“It is great to visit the marquee standing in the shadow of York Minster.  This is the perfect central location for a celebration of York’s small businesses.  It is great to see so many businesses attending this year.  It can be difficult for small businesses to compete with larger stores but small traders will often go the extra mile to help their customers or give advice. It is always good to know about other local businesses and services to contact someone locally if you require a service, or want a local product.

“It is also good for the owners of small businesses to get together and share ideas. As their MP, I have made myself available to help the Federation of Small Businesses, and to address issues that they face. I always try to support local shops and businesses, to ensure that money stays within the local economy.  I hope that people across the city will take time to visit the marquee this Saturday and then explore local businesses when they are in the city.  Hopefully  they will build links to contact throughout the year.”

Martyn Weller, York Branch Chairman from the Federation of Small Businesses says:
“The run up to Christmas is an important time of the year for small businesses. Today allows local businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and it is great to see the diversity and high quality products available.  This event demonstrates the huge contribution made by small businesses to the overall prosperity of the region.”

Councillor Janet Looker says:
“York’s small businesses are crucial to a thriving local economy and they add to the city’s character.  We want York residents and visitors to enjoy their shopping experience and there are some wonderful products for sale. Small businesses can offer unique and individual gifts that are not available in larger stores.

“Small businesses help the local economy and it is great to see them doing well.  I hope everyone will support this initiative and visit small businesses in the run up to Christmas.”
