Last month, Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, visited the British Heart Foundation shop on Goodramgate, York. Meeting volunteers and seeing how to the shop works; Rachael has a particular interest in health care both nationally and at a local level, having worked as a physiotherapist for the NHS.

Someone in the UK is struck by a heart attack every three minutes, and the British Heart Foundation does crucial work in supporting those who suffer from heart disease and developing new treatments through their cutting edge research. The British Heart Foundation also works to promote healthy lifestyles in order to prevent heart disease. Rachael recently biked 60 miles to the 2015 Labour Party Conference in aid of BHF, gaining awareness for their work and raising funds to support them.

The British Heart Foundation aims to achieve a world in which people do not die prematurely or suffer from cardiovascular disease, and they rely on shops such as this one in Goodramgate to fund their work. The shop is open seven days a week and sells a wide range of high quality second-hand and brand new clothing, shoes and accessories, books, music, toys and household items. They depend on the generosity of volunteers and the general public, and donations are always welcome. They now run a collection service, so if people aren’t able to take their donation to the shop the BHF will pick it up for free.

Rachael Maskell MP says:
“Everyone has a friend or family member who will be affected by heart disease at some point, and the British Heart Foundation plays an important role in developing life-saving treatments and helping those who suffer from heart disease. Supporting the British Heart Foundation shop on Goodramgate is a way in which we can all contribute to the work that they do.

“The British Heart Foundation relies on generous donations from the public and the hard work of volunteers such as these to carry out their crucial work.”

Karen Reynolds, Area Manager for the British Heart Foundation shop on Goodramgate says:
“We’re really grateful to Rachael Maskell for coming in, visiting our shop and meeting the team. We’re always looking for stock donations, which are absolutely essential to the success of the charity, and play a vital part in fighting coronary heart disease – the UK’s single biggest killer.

“We’re also always looking for more volunteers, so even if you can only spare an hour, pop to find out more information.”
