I will be voting against the triggering of Article 50, in line with the strong remain vote from my constituents last June.
There is much diversity across all communities in the UK, and Labour is the only Party that can speak for the whole country by ensuring that local people have a voice in politics. York has over a 1000 year history of being a centre of trade in Europe, and its economy through its two universities, manufacturers and tourism base still very much relying on Single Market membership and free trade arrangements.
An Opposition Day Debate was called last week in Parliament to highlight the cuts to school funding and the impact they are having on the ability of children to reach their full potential. Labour are also calling on the Government to ensure that all schools have the funding they need to provide an excellent education for every child.
This week, Rachael Maskell MP for York Central met with the Government Defence Minister over his decision to close Imphal Barracks by 2031. Following detailed discussions with the Armed Forces, families, the community, veterans, reserves and cadets, City of York Council, and the staff trade unions; the MP has written a detailed paper to highlight all the issues associated with the closure.
Rachael Maskell MP for York Central attended the Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration at York Minster’s historic Chapter House; remembering the victims of genocide from the Holocaust to the present day. In Westminster, Ms Maskell signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, in doing so pledging her commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people.
