Stop Turning Homes into Holiday Lets
Stop Turning Homes into Holiday Lets

I’ve submitted a Private Members’ Bill to license holiday lets. The aim of my Bill is to turn the tide on the number of homes being turned into holiday lets.

There are now an estimated 295,000 holiday homes in the UK.  In some areas, more than 50%of homes are holiday lets.  In some hotspots there is now an acute shortage of local housing, and local families are being forced out of their communities and forced to live elsewhere.

The provisional date for my Bill to be debated in the House of Commons is Friday 9 December. To ensure the debate is heard and the Bill progresses, you can help by writing to your own MP and asking them to attend the debate and support my Bill. See my template letter below, you can copy and paste this and use a website such as WriteToThem or TheyWorkForYou to find the email address of your MP.

Dear {MP NAME},

My names is {YOUR NAME} and I am a constituent of {YOUR CONSTITUENCY}. I am writing to you today because I am concerned about the expansion of holiday lets and the impact they are having on the availability of housing on many communities across the UK.

There are now an estimated 295,000 holiday homes in the UK.  In some areas, more than 50% of homes are holiday lets. In some hotspots there is now an acute shortage of local housing, and local families are being forced out of their communities and forced to live elsewhere.

This is something that’s particularly important to me as {EXPLAIN KEY REASONS AND ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE INFORMED THIS}.

I am asking you to take the following steps to address my concerns:

  • Support Rachael Maskell’s EDM 632 calling for a Short-Term Holiday Licensing Scheme
  • Speak at Rachael Maskell’s Private Members Bill debate on 9th of December 2023
  • Show your support for legislation on social media using the hashtags #HousingB4Holidays #LetsLicenseLets #StopHomesTurningIntoHolidayLets

If you feel unable to do these things, please could you write to me explaining why not and detailing what other actions you plan to take to tackle this issue.  If you’re unable to address this personally, I would like to request that you escalate my letter to the relevant Minister or department.

Please do keep me informed of any progress made.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

{YOUR NAME}
