Rachael Maskell MP for York Central has today welcomed Jeremy Corbyn MP for Islington North as the new leader of the Labour Party. Mr. Corbyn took a convincing lead in the leadership race and won on the first count taking 59.5% of the vote.

Mr. Corbyn will take over as leader with immediate effect.

At the same time it was announced that Tom Watson MP for West Bromwich East will be his deputy.

Rachael Maskell says:
“Jeremy Corbyn is one of the most experienced politicians in Westminster, having served his constituency for 32 years. He is an honest politician who has been dedicated to the Party and those he represents, often asking the difficult questions that no-one else dared to ask. With his passion to build a more peaceful and just world, there could be no better time for someone with the integrity of Mr. Corbyn to lead the Government’s Opposition.

“In his leadership bid, Jeremy has debated the major challenges facing us today. Labour will have a strong voice over an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top, on investing in public services and addressing issues like building social and affordable homes, climate change and supporting the most vulnerable in our society.

“The leadership contest has been the most inclusive in the history of any political party and has awakened debate across the country as well as here in York. I very much look forward to working with Jeremy and Tom as his deputy in order to get things done for people right across York.”
