Ban the Ivory Trade

Calling for urgent consultation on business rates

Following the recent announcement about the closure of Burgins Perfumary, a business which has been trading in York for 137 years, Rachael Maskell challenged the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, to say when he will begin an urgent consultation on business rates to help traders in York.  In his Spring Budget the Chancellor promised that “a new preferred approach to business rates” would be consulted on but this has not happened.

Questioning the Rail Minister on failing infrastructure

Rachael Maskell MP: "The East Coast Main Line returned £1BN to the the treasury in public ownership after the collapse of the National Express contract. I asked the Minister if Virgin or the taxpayer alone will be contributing to the cost of upgrading the crumbling network. Labour will nationalise our rail network, It's time for public ownership for the public interest."

Responding to Gibb Report

On Tuesday (4th July) a House of Commons debate was called to discuss the Gibb report outlining changes to be made to improve the Southern Rail network. Following Rachael Maskell’s recent appointment as a Shadow Minister for Transport, the Labour MP for York Central made a strong speech standing up for all Southern Rail users, making specific reference to those most vulnerable in society. Citing the “ageing infrastructure” and “profit-driven privatisation”, Rachael called for greater investment in the line to ensure the safety and protection of workers and users.

Yesterday, marked the State Opening of Parliament and the formal start of Parliament with the Queen’s Speech, which sets out the Government’s agenda in 2017-18. In Westminster, at the last Prime Minister's Questions, the Prime Minister failed to give an assurance to York Central’s MP, Rachael Maskell, that the government would intervene to try and avert the 300 job losses announced by Nestle yesterday and safeguard future jobs.

The Chancellor’s failure to mention the impact of leaving the EU in his first Budget was “astounding” says Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central. The MP also expressed concern that today’s Budget, which took place on International Women’s Day, had little to offer women, who, she said, had experienced 86% of the cuts since 2010, in terms of job security, wages and family.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Rachael Maskell MP for York Central attended the Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration at York Minster’s historic Chapter House; remembering the victims of genocide from the Holocaust to the present day. In Westminster, Ms Maskell signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, in doing so pledging her commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people.

Environment Questions

Last week, Rachael Maskell MP led Labour's Environment, Food and Rural Affairs questions as the Shadow Secretary of State.

Like many government departments, it seems DEFRA was woefully underprepared for a decision to leave the European Union, despite the enormous role that the EU plays in the UK's agricultural sector. Some 65% of agricultural workers are EU born and yet no plans have been made to ensure their security in the coming months and years.

Listen to our Armed Forces and take action

Rachael Maskell MP has warned the Defence Secretary he must take urgent action on the pay, pensions, accommodation and morale of the Armed Forces, or risk worsening the crisis over staff retention. The latest Armed Forces Continuous Attitudes Survey, published last week, has revealed stark declines in the number of personnel who are satisfied with their finances and their housing.

Last week, Rachael Maskell MP questioned David Cameron at Prime Minister's Question time over the closure of Bootham Park Hospital referring to the recently released NHS England and Healthwatch’s reports that highlighted the failures in the government’s Health and Social Care Act (2012) and the authorities and jurisdictions of partner organisations in securing a safe services.
