"The Government’s plans to force all schools to become academies is a costly reorganisation of our schools from the top down and I know so many people in York are totally opposed to them. It is believed that it will take £1.3bn out of the education budget which could be used to support and improve the life chances of our children. At a time when schools are facing huge challenges caused by falling budgets and shortages of teachers, this is unnecessary and, I believe, it will harm standards in our schools. The vast majority of non-academies affected by this policy will be primary schools, and over 80 per-cent of these are already good and outstanding. The Government has not provided any evidence that schools are better off without the support of the local Authority, and all authoritative inquiries have said that there are no overall gains to being an academy.Read more
Last Thursday (17th March) in the House of Commons Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, asked the DEFRA Minister responsible for flooding, Rory Stewart, if the Government would fully fund improvements to the Foss barrier. Rachael Maskell MP is supporting the Air Quality Bill, published this month with the support of the British Lung Foundation, Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. The Bill, presented by fellow Labour Co-op MP Geraint Davies, follows a report from the Royal Colleges that diesel fumes cause 40,000 premature deaths every year from lung cancer, strokes and heart disease. Earlier this week, York Central MP Rachael Maskell, called on the Government to rethink the way it determines how money is allocated for school repairs. Under the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) school buildings are prioritised on the basis of information from the property data survey programme. The aim of the survey is to identify where poor condition is most highly concentrated, as well as looking at places where the continued operation of the school is most at risk and where the cost of addressing the issues would present the greatest challenges.Read more

Rachael Maskell MP, Shadow Minister for Armed Forces Personnel and Veterans, has pledged to ensure that Armed Forces veterans will not have to battle blindness alone at a special parliamentary reception earlier this week, held at the House of Commons.
The reception, held on 23 February, was organised by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision impaired ex-Service men and women, to raise awareness of the charity and to encourage all local authorities to work with Blind Veterans UK to reach out to more veterans with severe sight loss so that they are able to access the Charity’s free services and support.Read more
